Heitz Cellar winery is located in a small but adorable stone tasting room on 29 in St. Helena. They make some wonderful wines, including the Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet which is among Napa’s best, and they don’t charge a tasting fee. This is one of the only wineries in Napa that allows visitors to try their wines on the house. Now, you don’t get to try the fancy stuff like the Martha’s Vineyard cab unless it is a special occasion, but they have many other really nice wines that are included on the tasting list.
I have visited the tasting room several times and am really a fan of their cabs. They had a package deal for a while where you could buy three bottles of their “reserve” cabs for $189 (this is a deal if you see what they each sell for). The wines, which included the Trailside Vineyard, the Bella Oaks Vineyard and the Martha’s Vineyard, aged so well. I have also purchased their NV (Non-Vintage) Ink grade port which is still resting away in our cellar.
Everyone we met in the tasting room was very friendly and attentive. Add this to your tasting route as a last minute option because no appointment is needed.
Downsides? I cannot think of any reason to not visit this winery. No fee, great wines, no need to make an appointment. The only issue may be crowds on busy weekends but go early if this concerns you.
