I was really eager to visit Plumpjack to try their Cabernet. I had heard great things about the wine and added this winery to the itinerary as a result. You can imagine my disappointment when we arrived to learn that the Cab was sold out and therefore not included in the tasting. They had some other great wines for us to try though.
Plumpjack’s sister winery, Cade, did not at this point have its own tasting room so their wines were part of the tasting. The first wine, the Cade Sauvignon Blanc was light and crisp, my overused description for Napa SBs. The 06 Plumpjack Reserve Chardonnay was next (no butter). Both of the reds we tasted were great. The 05 Plumpjack Merlot (jammy with chocolate and cherry, and very smooth) and the 05 Cade Cuvee (Cab and Merlot blend from Howell Mountain).
I had my first celebrity sighting at Plumpjack as Neil Patrick Harris was leaving the winery as we arrived. Very exciting!
Downsides? Their wines sell out so don’t count on tasting everything. The wines are very nice but they are expensive. Cade wines can now be tasted at their winery up on Howell Mountain but I have not been up there yet.
