Manzoni is the kind of winery I seek out on my wine tasting travels. Family owned, small production, commitment to quality and no frills. Fancy tasting rooms are nice but not necessary when the wine can speak for itself.
Located in the picturesque Santa Lucia Highlands, Manzoni makes some really lovely wines. Their focus is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. I really loved one of the Chards (08 Lucia Highlands $26). Their Syrahs were also quite impressive and I was particularly taken with the 07 Manzoni Vineyards Syrah ($26, very smooth and even with cherry, blackberry and pepper).
Downsides? None. Great wines, very fun atmosphere. No frills or attitude. Really enjoyed our visit and bought a few wines.
