Larkmead is located up in Calistoga but well worth the trip. It is appointment only and includes a tour so be on time (we were late which I regretted terribly). The tasting room is a gorgeous white house located adjacent to the vineyards. Beautiful.
We tasted some really wonderful wines. The first was an unusual grape for Napa. the 07 Tokai is made from grapes grown on 120 year old vines. This typically northern Italian varietal produced a fruity, peachy wine. $28 and very small production.
Next up was the 07 Sauvignon Blanc which was more full bodied than a typical Napa SB. Aged in some oak. The reds followed, starting with the 05 Firebelle blend. Very elegant wine made from mostly Merlot.
Two of the cabs were at the end of the tasting. The current release 05 and the 02 library wine. Both were amazing. Smooth, silky and luxurious.
I am not always interested in hearing the story of the winery when on a tour, however, the Larkmead history is very cool. Go hear it for yourself.
Downsides? None, but you need an appointment. Another opportunity to get hooked on a $70 Cab.
