Deerfield Ranch is one of the newer wineries in the Kenwood section of Sonoma. We first visited sometime around 2008 and were thrilled to discover a great new winery in this area. On our visit, the new tasting room in the caves had just opened and that really added wonderful ambiance to our visit.
One of the variables that can affect a wine tasting experience is the attitude and enthusiasm of the pourer. Even years later as I write this review, I clearly remember how much fun she was and how she made us love the wines. The winery produces a wide array of wines from traditional varietals like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet to European style blends like a super tuscan and a WONDERFUL bordeaux blend deemed their DRX Meritage. We ended up joining the wine club so at this point I have had so many of their wines and have never been unhappy with any of them. The price points vary a lot – from around $20 to $100. One of the more modestly priced wines is their Merlot Cuvee which is around $22 and a really great wine (75% Merlot with Cabernet, Cab Franc, Malbec and Sangiovese).
Deerfield Ranch does not rush to release their wines, which is a fact I greatly respect and appreciate. I prefer earthy and mellow wines over bold and fruity, and the barrel and bottle aging of Deerfield wines benefits the wines. It is great to get a 10 year old wine in a wine club shipment that can be enjoyed in the near term. This is not very common in my experience.
Another great benefit of Deerfield wines is that people who suffer from red wine triggered migraines are fine drinking their reds. This is partly because the Deerfield winemaker’s wife suffers from this so he makes the wine with this condition in mind. My sister in law can only drink Deerfield reds and has never suffered a migraine which she almost always does with other reds.
Downsides? Can’t think of any. Great wines in a really cool tasting room. Somewhat off the beaten path so hopefully not too crowded but no guarantees there because is it a great place.
